It’s a constant daily recognition of what in me needs to die in order for me to follow Him more closely... and the reason that this is important, and it's not exhausting, it's actually the most freeing thing I've ever done in my life." —Jessica L. Morris
Key Conversation Breakthroughs:
SUMMARYIn this reunion episode of the Interviewing Jesus Podcast, host Kristen Wambach sits down with theological researcher and spiritual director Jessica Morris to confront the performance-driven mindsets that quietly erode modern devotional life. Pulling away from rigid checklists, self-effort, and transactional religion, the conversation centers on entering the effortless "living room of grace" made available through the finished work of the cross. Key themes explored in the episode include:
Our Question...Have you ever found yourself lying awake at night, silently tallying up your spiritual scorecard for the day? Perhaps you are white-knuckling your way through a grueling quiet time routine, desperately trying to earn an "A" from a demanding schoolmaster. In my years of working as a spiritual investigative journalist and coach, I have met countless believers who are utterly exhausted by the performance-driven engines of modern devotion. We desperately want to live Spiritually Brave, yet we frequently find ourselves trapped in a transactional courtroom where our connection with Heaven is measured by rigid checklists. But there is a better, simpler way—a Monday-morning reality where your striving finally stalls out, and you step into the effortless living room of grace. The Mirror of Luke 9:23 and the Finished CrossThe pivot begins when we look closely at the actual mechanics of our union with Jesus. In this latest conversation on the Interviewing Jesus Podcast, theological researcher Jessica Morris and I sat down to dissect a passage that has historically been used to whip believers into shape: Luke 9:23. Traditionally, we are told to take up our cross daily as a painful, grueling act of self-effort. But when we lean straight into the Mirror Translation, the script completely flips. The text reveals that His cross is actually your cross. It is pre-picked up, fully dealt with, and finished. You do not have to carry a heavy burden of self-induced suffering to prove your sonship to the Father. Instead, when you see your cross mirrored in His, the exhausting performance of "dying to self" transforms from a legalistic chore into a celebration of your permanent wholeness. This shift immediately changes how you wake up on Monday morning. You are no longer trying to achieve victory; you are living and resting in a victory that has already been won. God doesn't pressure. He's a gentleman... It's not urgent, it's just now." —Jessica L. Morris Exposing the Lie of Being "Used" by GodFor decades, our religious culture has praised the idea of being a tool "used" by God. We wear it like a badge of honor, but if we investigate the language, we find a highly transactional, mechanical paradigm. A tool is only valuable as long as it is working; once it is worn out, it is set aside. As an author and researcher, I want to challenge this vocabulary because it subtly feeds the performance engine. During our reunion, Jessica shared a stunning blueprint of how to see ourselves not as mechanical tools, but as open, willing channels for the Holy Spirit. A channel does not strive to pump water; it simply stays open and allows the living water to flow through effortlessly. When you drop the heavy expectation of being used, you unsubscribe from the manufactured timelines of religious urgency. You realize that God does not pressure you. He is a gentleman, and His timing is never frantic. This is the foundation of waking up to your permanent, unshakeable kingdom identity. CONNECT WITH JESSICA L. MORRISx
About Jessica Morris
How did a scared, insecure, but outwardly successful little girl find the courage to grow up, recover from addictions, and then walk away from a 30+ year career to blindly follow the call of God on her life? After growing up hating her alcoholic, abusive, and hypocritical minister father, and therefore being more than suspicious of God's love for her, Jessica plummeted into the hell of her own addictions and ran away from organized religion. Then, through her denial of a spiritual experience with Jesus, she entered into a 6-year hell-on-earth bottom which led to the desperation that made her willing to attempt recovery. It was during her first years of recovery that Jessica crossed paths with two extraordinary men who helped her to overcome the trauma of her childhood and young adult life so that she could begin to truly live a life of meaning and purpose. First, she met Steve, a certified addictions counselor, who helped her dig up and get rid of the past abuses that had been holding her hostage in victimhood; and second, she met Paul, a workplace chaplain, who shone a light on the Truth of Jesus. Through work with these two wise souls, Jessica started to heal from all that had been holding her back from living the life she was meant to live. These two men, along with the many fellows she met in recovery, gave Jessica a safe place to become who she was created to be. Because of that recovery process, Jessica felt more and more pulled to learning whatever she could about God, Jesus, and everything related to the Bible. It was in her third year of part-time studies at seminary, when she tripped over "eschatology" and "spiritual direction" at the same time, that she was catapulted into a whirlwind that would forever transform her spiritual journey. Through the research into, and study and writing of both topics, Jessica discovered the essentialness of dying to herself (her whole self) in order to truly become Higher Powered by surrendering her whole self to following The Way of Jesus Christ. Jessica writes about her recovery and spiritual awakening to the Truth that is Jesus in her books, on her blog, and through the poetry that God gives her during her morning quiet times with Him. She also practices spiritual direction with individuals and groups, specializing in those who have experienced childhood and religious trauma, as well as those in recovery from addictions and/or the family disease of alcoholism. Jessica's goal in this life is to get everyone to notice that it is in taking continuous action on a daily basis to die to oneself and live in The Way of Jesus Christ that we will open the space for everyone in this world to plug into a personal relationship with Him - which, in Jessica's opinion, is His 2nd Coming that we have all been promised. Do you love Jesus but often struggle to understand His message and the language of the Bible? Have you found yourself forgetting the spiritual wisdom offered in your morning readings by noon? Are you looking for a way to incorporate your own spiritual practices of prayer, meditation, and writing with what you read and learn about the Word of God? If you answered yes to any of those questions, Sonbathing is the perfect book for you! An interactive and meditative collection of 100 sayings of Jesus, Sonbathing offers writing, prayer, and meditation prompts for the reader, as well as space to journal, suggestions for further study, and vulnerable insights from a woman who has experienced a lifetime of overcoming the obstacles that get in the way of a fulfilling relationship with Jesus Christ. P.S. I’ll be honest with you—I’m a "Hardback" kind of gal. There is something about diving deep and writing all over the pages, capturing the thoughts and conversations I hear from the Lord in real-time. While the ePub is convenient, it limits your ability to use this as a truly responsive Playbook.
Between you and me, the royalties on a printed book are much smaller, but the impact is so much greater. I want you to have the version that lets you "suit up" and engage. If you want to mark it up, wear it out, and make it yours—go for the Hardback.💋
