Are you secretly exhausted from trying to get an "A" in your spiritual life?

In this laugh-filled reunion on the Interviewing Jesus Podcast, host Kristen Wambach welcomes back theological researcher and spiritual director Jessica Morris to dismantle the performance-driven engines of modern devotion. Together, they dive into Luke 9:23 to help you trade the legalistic courtroom of religious perfectionism for the effortless living room of grace. Pull up a chair to learn how to drop the burden of striving, step into a continuous spiritual flow, and find radical peace by unsubscribing from urgency.

  • Balancing Trauma Excavation with Grace: We wrestle with inner healing, sharing how to prevent deep soul-work and "dying to self" from becoming a performance-based chore, anchoring you in wholeness instead.
  • Moving from Broken Cisterns to Absolute Peace: When people inevitably fail us, we explore how to anchor your inner stability solely in the unshakeable nature of Jesus.
  • The Paradigm Shift: From "Use" to "Flow": We challenge the idea of being a tool "used" by God, shifting instead to a blueprint of becoming open channels for the Holy Spirit to flow through effortlessly.
  • Luke 9:23 and Your True I Amness: Leaning into the Mirror Translation, we explore the liberating truth that His cross is your cross—fully finished so self-effort can finally stall out.
  • Jesus Isn't Grading Your Faith: Jessica shares a personal story that shatters her own religious scorecard, offering the profound relief that God isn't grading your performance.
  • Unsubscribing from Urgency: (Music Video) We unpack a live testimony from a recovery circle that redefines what it means to live in the "now." Learn how to identify frantic timelines as a trauma response and step firmly into the unhurried timing of a gentleman Savior.

SUMMARY

In this reunion episode of the Interviewing Jesus Podcast, host Kristen Wambach sits down with theological researcher and spiritual director Jessica Morris to confront the performance-driven mindsets that quietly erode modern devotional life. Pulling away from rigid checklists, self-effort, and transactional religion, the conversation centers on entering the effortless "living room of grace" made available through the finished work of the cross.
Key themes explored in the episode include:
  • The Reality of Holding Space: Demystifying spiritual direction as an unhurried environment meant for vulnerability before God, rather than a workspace to fix behavioral flaws.
  • Dismantling the Spiritual Scorecard: Confronting the exhaustion of religious perfectionism. Jessica shares a liberating realization from her own training: Jesus is not grading your faith.
  • Shifting from "Use" to "Flow": Challenging the terminology of being a tool "used" by God, pivoting instead to a healthier framework of becoming open, relational channels for the Holy Spirit to flow through effortlessly.
  • Luke 9:23 in the Mirror Translation: Exploring our true "I amness" by recognizing that His cross is our cross. Because the heavy lifting of absolute redemption is already finished, self-striving can finally stall out.
  • Unsubscribing from Urgency: Identifying frantic timelines, the pressure to instantly heal, and forced spiritual breakthroughs as trauma responses. By stepping out of manufactured panic, believers can realign with a gentleman Savior who operates simply in the peace of the "now."

Our Question...

Have you ever found yourself lying awake at night, silently tallying up your spiritual scorecard for the day? Perhaps you are white-knuckling your way through a grueling quiet time routine, desperately trying to earn an "A" from a demanding schoolmaster. In my years of working as a spiritual investigative journalist and coach, I have met countless believers who are utterly exhausted by the performance-driven engines of modern devotion. We desperately want to live Spiritually Brave, yet we frequently find ourselves trapped in a transactional courtroom where our connection with Heaven is measured by rigid checklists. But there is a better, simpler way—a Monday-morning reality where your striving finally stalls out, and you step into the effortless living room of grace.

The Mirror of Luke 9:23 and the Finished Cross

The pivot begins when we look closely at the actual mechanics of our union with Jesus. In this latest conversation on the Interviewing Jesus Podcast, theological researcher Jessica Morris and I sat down to dissect a passage that has historically been used to whip believers into shape: Luke 9:23. Traditionally, we are told to take up our cross daily as a painful, grueling act of self-effort. But when we lean straight into the Mirror Translation, the script completely flips.
The text reveals that His cross is actually your cross. It is pre-picked up, fully dealt with, and finished. You do not have to carry a heavy burden of self-induced suffering to prove your sonship to the Father. Instead, when you see your cross mirrored in His, the exhausting performance of "dying to self" transforms from a legalistic chore into a celebration of your permanent wholeness. This shift immediately changes how you wake up on Monday morning. You are no longer trying to achieve victory; you are living and resting in a victory that has already been won.

Unsubscribing from Urgency: Why Jesus Isn't Grading Your Faith with Jessica Morris ❖ 294
00:00 Kristen Wambach welcomes listeners to a brand-new episode of the Interviewing Jesus Podcast, setting an intimate atmosphere around the kitchen table for a high-warmth reunion conversation.
04:39 Jessica Morris explains that a spiritual director sits with you and holds the space so that you can get completely vulnerable with God, pointing out the beautiful things you are missing simply because you are too close to your own situation.
10:10 Kristen Wambach asks how we prevent the daily practice of inner healing and dying to self from turning into an exhausting, performance-based chore, to which Jessica Morris responds that it requires a constant recognition of what needs to surrender to follow Him, which ultimately brings radical freedom rather than exhaustion.
18:15 Kristen Wambach brings up the relational disappointment that happens when leaders or mentors fail us, and Jessica Morris offers a stunning pivot, sharing that relying on a single human being will always lead to disappointment, but Jesus is the only source you can completely rely on every single day to fill you with absolute peace.
22:20 Kristen Wambach challenges the traditional religious language of being a tool used by God, prompting an upgrade in vocabulary to seeing ourselves as open, willing channels for the Holy Spirit to flow through effortlessly.
32:16 Kristen Wambach reads Luke 9:23 from the Mirror Translation, highlighting the companion walk of union where our self-effort stalls out once we realize His cross is our cross, fully picked up and finished.
43:12 Jessica Morris shares a breathtaking personal story from her training when her supervisor stepped in during a moment of self-doubt to ask if she could recognize that Jesus isn't grading her performance, instantly taking the wind out of her religious sails.
50:12 Jessica Morris recounts a powerful testimony from a newcomer in a recovery circle who declared they were unsubscribing from urgency, reminding listeners that God is a gentleman who never pressures or panics because He operates entirely in the peace of the now.
58:00 Kristen Wambach shares her closing thoughts, wrapping up the conversation with a descriptive studio outro and inviting the community to continue living spiritually brave.
God doesn't pressure. He's a gentleman... It's not urgent, it's just now." —Jessica L. Morris

Exposing the Lie of Being "Used" by God

For decades, our religious culture has praised the idea of being a tool "used" by God. We wear it like a badge of honor, but if we investigate the language, we find a highly transactional, mechanical paradigm. A tool is only valuable as long as it is working; once it is worn out, it is set aside. As an author and researcher, I want to challenge this vocabulary because it subtly feeds the performance engine.
During our reunion, Jessica shared a stunning blueprint of how to see ourselves not as mechanical tools, but as open, willing channels for the Holy Spirit. A channel does not strive to pump water; it simply stays open and allows the living water to flow through effortlessly. When you drop the heavy expectation of being used, you unsubscribe from the manufactured timelines of religious urgency. You realize that God does not pressure you. He is a gentleman, and His timing is never frantic. This is the foundation of waking up to your permanent, unshakeable kingdom identity.

About Jessica Morris
How did a scared, insecure, but outwardly successful little girl find the courage to grow up, recover from addictions, and then walk away from a 30+ year career to blindly follow the call of God on her life? After growing up hating her alcoholic, abusive, and hypocritical minister father, and therefore being more than suspicious of God's love for her, Jessica plummeted into the hell of her own addictions and ran away from organized religion. Then, through her denial of a spiritual experience with Jesus, she entered into a 6-year hell-on-earth bottom which led to the desperation that made her willing to attempt recovery. It was during her first years of recovery that Jessica crossed paths with two extraordinary men who helped her to overcome the trauma of her childhood and young adult life so that she could begin to truly live a life of meaning and purpose. First, she met Steve, a certified addictions counselor, who helped her dig up and get rid of the past abuses that had been holding her hostage in victimhood; and second, she met Paul, a workplace chaplain, who shone a light on the Truth of Jesus. Through work with these two wise souls, Jessica started to heal from all that had been holding her back from living the life she was meant to live. These two men, along with the many fellows she met in recovery, gave Jessica a safe place to become who she was created to be. Because of that recovery process, Jessica felt more and more pulled to learning whatever she could about God, Jesus, and everything related to the Bible. It was in her third year of part-time studies at seminary, when she tripped over "eschatology" and "spiritual direction" at the same time, that she was catapulted into a whirlwind that would forever transform her spiritual journey. Through the research into, and study and writing of both topics, Jessica discovered the essentialness of dying to herself (her whole self) in order to truly become Higher Powered by surrendering her whole self to following The Way of Jesus Christ. Jessica writes about her recovery and spiritual awakening to the Truth that is Jesus in her books, on her blog, and through the poetry that God gives her during her morning quiet times with Him. She also practices spiritual direction with individuals and groups, specializing in those who have experienced childhood and religious trauma, as well as those in recovery from addictions and/or the family disease of alcoholism. Jessica's goal in this life is to get everyone to notice that it is in taking continuous action on a daily basis to die to oneself and live in The Way of Jesus Christ that we will open the space for everyone in this world to plug into a personal relationship with Him - which, in Jessica's opinion, is His 2nd Coming that we have all been promised.

Anchoring Your Stability in the
Face of Relational Failure

Of course, stepping into this level of spiritual freedom requires us to look at our relational foundations. We have all experienced the pain of watching leaders, mentors, or spiritual giants fall. When the people we rely on inevitably fail us, our personal world can easily fracture.
Over my years of coaching, I have found that religious disappointment is one of the quickest ways believers get pulled back into performance. Out of fear, we begin striving to control our environment and our spiritual progress. But the key to surviving relational failure is learning to anchor your inner stability solely in the unshakeable, finished nature of Jesus. When your identity is tethered directly to Him, human inconsistencies lose their power to derail you. You can love people deeply without demanding that they be your ultimate source of life.

Step Into the Living Room of Grace

If you are tired of running on the treadmill of spiritual perfectionism, I want to invite you to take a deep, long breath. Jesus is not grading your faith, and there is no spiritual report card waiting for you in Heaven. The finished work of the cross was designed to take the heavy lifting out of your daily walk.
It is time to pull up a chair to the kitchen table, drop your scorecard, and let yourself rest in the unhurried warmth of the Father's presence. Step out of the courtroom, leave the checklists behind, and learn what it truly means to live Spiritually Brave.

COACHING CHURCH ACTIVATIONS

Activation 1: The Scorecard Surrender
Focus: Dismantling religious perfectionism.
  • The Step: Hand out small index cards or a piece of paper to everyone in the room. Ask them to write down the one spiritual area where they feel they are currently struggling to earn an "A" (e.g., consistent morning prayer, managing a trauma trigger perfectly, or feeling like they aren't reading enough scripture).
  • The Shift: Read Luke 9:23 from the Mirror Translation aloud. Instruct them to flip the card over and write in large letters: NOT GRADED. * The Climax: Have them physically rip the card in half, letting the pieces fall as a declaration that they are stepping out of the transactional courtroom of performance and completely unsubscribing from religious urgency.
Activation 2: From Use to FlowFocus: Moving from structural obligation to relational partnership.
  • The Step: Have everyone close their eyes, place both hands out in front of them with clenched, tight fists, and think about their calling, ministry role, or spiritual giftings. This clenched posture represents the mechanical tension of trying to be a hard-working tool "used" by God.
  • The Shift: On a count of three, instruct them to slowly open their hands flat, palms facing upward toward heaven, and take a deep, unhurried breath.
  • The Climax: Guide them in a collective, spoken echo activation: “Holy Spirit, I lay down the burden of being used. I am an open channel. Flow through me effortlessly today.” Allow 60 seconds of complete silence for them to experience the change in pressure.
Activation 3: The 2-Minute "Sonbath"Focus: Experiencing the unhurried timing of a gentleman Savior.
  • The Step: Set an intentional, absolute timer for exactly 2 minutes. Dim the room lights or project a simple, warm, still image of a living room or an unhurried outdoor sunrise.
  • The Shift: Tell the community that for these 120 seconds, they have strict permission to do absolutely nothing for God. They cannot pray in tongues, they cannot review their behavioral flaws, and they cannot ask for a breakthrough. Their only job is to sit quietly and "sonbathe"—letting the warm, finished work of the cross wash over their identity.
  • The Climax: Close the timer by reading Jessica's breakthrough truth over the microphone: “God doesn't pressure. He's a gentleman. It's not urgent, it's just now.”
If we do not actively transition from the courtroom of performance to the living room of grace, our spiritual disciplines quickly transform into a grueling chore." —Kristen Wambach

Kristen’s life mission is to help you drop the religious scorecard, pull up a chair to the Father's table, and discover what it truly means to live Spiritually Brave.

Final Summary: Trading the Scorecard for the Flow

This conversation was a deep, unhurried excavation of the religious performance engines that quietly exhaust so many of us. Together with theological researcher and spiritual director Jessica Morris, we pulled back the curtain on the transactional courtrooms of modern devotion and looked straight into the effortless living room of grace. By examining Luke 9:23 through the Mirror Translation, we dismantled the grueling self-effort of "dying to self" and replaced it with a beautiful, Monday-morning reality: your cross was pre-picked up, fully dealt with, and completely finished in His. We challenged the mechanical language of being a tool "used" by God, mapping out instead how to live as open, relational channels for the Holy Spirit to flow through effortlessly. When people fail us and religious timelines pressure us, we found that our only true, unshakeable anchor is the finished nature of Jesus.
What We Gained: A New Blueprint for Rest
  • A Shift in Vocabulary: We traded the heavy, transactional expectation of being a tool "used" by God for the relational ease of being an open channel for His Spirit.
  • Scriptural Relief: We gained a fresh, liberating perspective on Luke 9:23, recognizing that our identity is already secure, whole, and fully realized in Christ's finished work.
  • Freedom from Urgency: We stepped off the treadmill of manufactured spiritual panic and learned how to unsubscribe from the frantic timelines of self-induced healing.
What God Highlighted: "No Report Cards"Throughout this episode, the Holy Spirit cast a bright, healing light on the secret exhaustion of the believer's heart. God beautifully highlighted that He is not grading your faith. There is no spiritual scorecard, no classroom clipboard, and no performance report waiting for you in Heaven. He highlighted His own nature as a perfect gentleman—One who never pressures, never rushes, and always meets us in the unhurried warmth of the "now." He reminded us that when human mentors and systems inevitably fracture, our stability is eternally safe when it is tethered to Him alone.

BEYOND THE THRESHOLD
x
I believe that the gap between Heaven and Earth is not a distance to be traveled, but a threshold to be crossed. My faith isn’t found in "stale bread" religion, but in a face-to-face, relational reality with a God who is better than our current bandwidth can imagine.
The Pillars of Our Experience:
  • The Restoration of All Things: I believe no story is too broken for the goodness of God. From the depths of the "Field of Blood" to the heights of the celestial courts, His heart is set on our complete wholeness.
  • The Safety of Belonging: For the Servant heart and the Mercy soul, I believe the Father is building a "Sure House"—a place where your unique design is celebrated, and your presence is essential to the family of God.
  • Redemptive DNA: I believe every person carries a God-inspired signature. By uncovering our Redemptive Gifts, we move from the "poverty of striving" into the wealthy identity of an heir.
  • Relational Discernment: I believe in a "Rhema" connection—a living, breathing conversation with Jesus that provides the supernatural wisdom to navigate our actual, messy lives.
I believe in the "Dangerous Hope" that shires up the GATES of our lives, ensuring that neither height nor depth can separate us from the love that first called us Spiritually BRAVE.
