The Raw Story: Stepping Out of the Film RoomWe live so much of our daily experience locked between two exhausting goalposts: rehashing yesterday's broken plays and anxiously rehearsing tomorrow's demands. We measure our spiritual standing by the sheer volume of our output—more devotionals checked off, more disciplines conquered, more frantic running down the field just hoping God notices our hustle. Picture Jesus walking down the road to Emmaus, flanked not by stuffy theoreticians, but by Vince Lombardi and Bill Belichick. Imagine two of the most relentless, revered head coaches in football history walking side by side with the Savior. Belichick famously noted that perception is the byproduct of preparation: when you do the work in the film room, the entire game slows down, you stop guessing, and you begin knowing the play before the ball is even snapped. Yet in our spiritual walk, most of us haven't slowed the game down at all. We are running ragged routes because we are reading the black ink of our circumstances while completely missing the vast, white spaces of His Presence. We have turned our walk with God into performance anxiety when He designed it as an embodied, living perception of His Goodness. The Jesus Conversation & Scriptural AnchorWhen I look across the Generational Timeline—the ledger of inspired works and divine moves written by God’s very finger across our lifetime—I am convinced of one unwavering truth: God is infinitely better than our narrow, religious bandwidth allows. Jesus looked at His disciples and gave them the keys of the kingdom (Matthew 16:19). Notice the verb tense: it is past tense. He did not say, "If you perform flawlessly this week, I might loan you access to My authority." He placed the keys into our hands because the cross settled the score once and for all. As Revelation 19:10 reminds us, the testimony of Jesus is the very breath of prophecy—the immediate atmosphere of the living Word. In ancient Hebrew wisdom, perception is not an intellectual exercise of the brain; it is an embodied function of the heart (lēb), the true command center of your will, emotion, and life energy. The Hebrew sages taught that the Torah was originally given as "black fire on white fire." The black letters are the visible, literal words—the Logos. But the white fire is the open parchment surrounding every character—the Rhema, the unseen breath, the relational space where the Coach’s voice whispers. In traditional scribal law, if the black ink ever bleeds together and touches, breaking the white fire, the entire scroll loses its authority. When your calendar and soul become so choked with personal striving that there is zero white space left, your perception shuts down. You see only your failures instead of His finished design. But when your heart rests in His original innocence, you begin to operate in ra'ah (spiritual vision that sees reality from God's vantage point) and discern the sweet riach (the undeniable spiritual aroma) of Christ's triumph. Do not carry the memory of yesterday's failures, nor postpone your inheritance for tomorrow's striving. The work is finished, and the kingdom is at hand—your eternal history is activated by the simple and present act of being the Beloved today."— HOW GOOD IS GOD Go Deeper in the Spirit:For more on breaking free from past timelines and learning to perceive God's goodness in the present moment, listen to Kristen's deep-dive conversation: Developing Your Spiritual Senses: Faith Producers International Podcast with Dr. George Watkins Coaching Church Reader ActivationGod is not asking you to invent a play that saves the day; He is launching a Hail Mary pass of unfailing favor right into your chest.
