Our paths recently crossed, and I was captivated by his story—a narrative that moves from a bustling newsroom to the world of education and beyond. Our conversation began with a warm exchange, as Dr. Brassell, with his characteristic humor, jokingly mentioned that if he ever finds himself at the pearly gates, he’s bringing me along for an endorsement. His light-heartedness immediately set the tone for a delightful discussion. Dr. Brassell has been a globe-trotter these days, sharing experiences that range from the cultural richness of Cuba to the historic depths of Robben Island in South Africa. His recount of being in South Korea during martial law was both thrilling and humbling—a reminder of the unpredictable nature of global travel. Based in the vibrant city of Denver, Colorado, Dr. Brassell has transitioned from the role of an educator to a revered leader in the educational sphere. Our chat naturally led to the pivotal moments that shaped his career. His journey began over three decades ago as a journalist, covering significant events like the 1992 presidential election. Despite his love for journalism, a friend's tip about teaching opportunities in South Central Los Angeles led him to education, driven, as he humorously notes, by the "high pay" of $25,000 a year compared to journalism's $16,500. But life is never a straight line. In 2005, a real estate seminar scam left him and his wife with nothing. Yet, instead of dwelling on the loss, Dr. Brassell embraced the lessons. He speaks fondly of his wife, his soulmate, who stood by him through thick and thin. This experience taught him the fleeting nature of money and the importance of empathy—realizing that one cannot truly understand a person’s journey without knowing their complete story. Dr. Brassell’s life is a testament to resilience and the power of positive thinking. His story reminds us that every setback is a setup for a comeback.
